James H. Wright

James (Jim) Henry Wright was given his wings to glory on Friday, May 29, 2015. He died peacefully with great dignity and pride. Jim was born on July 4, 1935 in Roanoke, Virginia as the youngest child of four to June and Lady Ethel Saunders Wright.

At the age of 15, Jim served in the United States Army Air Corp where he learned the skills that would eventually lead him into Radio Communications while living in Louisiana. He later moved to Houston, TX where he began working for Houston Metro Transit Authority until his retirement as a Supervisor.

In 1984, he met and fell in love with Portia Dykes from Boston, Massachusetts. Jim and Portia taught their children ethics and values while rendering them a good educational and religious foundation and developing their tastes in music, the arts, literature, and the military. Above all, he never lost sight of the meaning of hard-work, laughter, commitment, love, support, giving, and sharing with his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his father and mother, June and Lady Ethel Wright; his brothers William Saunders; Moses Saunders; and his sister, Toya Wright-Hagans. He is also preceded in death by his special friend and father-in-law he affectionately called Papa Rock, Deacon Richard Norris, Jr. He will be forever cherished by his wife, Portia; their two children, Talia and James (DeShauna) Dykes II of Houston, TX; his six sister-in-laws; Wanda Fay (Pastor Dempsey) Daniels of Pensacola, FL, Blanche (Lincoln) Belton of Missouri City, TX, Myra Norris of Cypress, TX, Wendy (Byron) Edmond of Houston, TX, Tonya Norris of Pensacola, FL, and Ester Norris of Atlanta, GA; his four brother-in-laws, Richard (Barbara) Aleem of Pensacola, FL, Jameel (Valerie) Riza of Atlanta, GA, Mark (Marlene) Norris of Pensacola, FL, and Isiah (Stephanie) Johnson of Pensacola, FL; many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and relatives.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 6th at 11:00 A.M. at the Advantage Funeral Home Chapel, 7010 Chetwood Dr. Houston, Texas 77081.
