James “Jim” Joseph Pirrung, 91, of Freeport, Texas passed away March 17, 2018 at CHI St. Luke’s Brazosport Hospital of natural causes. Born April 11, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio to Richard and Domicella Pirrung.He was a graduate in the engineering program at Ohio State. He married his one and only true love, Dorothy Candler also of Columbus, Ohio on June 18, 1948
James was an avid tennis player, but had to finally give it up at the age of 82. He loved the water and was a Veteran in the Navy in WWII on USS Waller DD-466. He was a navigator and a member of a sail boat race team that participated annually in the Edgewater Yacht Club Regatta sail boat race competition.
He retired in Freeport, Texas so he could enjoy the Texas coastal and Gulf waters for its awesome boating and fishing experiences. Jim fished in the Atlantic, Great Lakes (ice fishing in Lake Michigan), fished in the Rocky Mountain streams and rivers, as well as the Mississippi. Retiring as a civil engineer from H.K. Ferguson in Cleveland, Ohio, he and Dorothy set sail through the inland waterways to the Mississippi and down the Gulf, a six month adventure to start their retirements.
In Freeport Jim was very active in City Council and the VFW. He held an annual gathering for the Houston Power Squadron at his home each year in April called “The Tax Relief”. He was always happy to feed a crowd. He and Dorothy participated as well in delivering Meals on Wheels to disabled and elderly residents of the community.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Katie and son, Charles Allen Pirrung. He is survived by his spouse, Dorothy; 6 children, Mari Baldwin, Paul Pirrung, Joyce Lewis, Jeanne Peacock, Terry Pirrung and Dianne Vaniel and their spouses; 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m. at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home with interment to follow at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery.
