James (Jim) Peters passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024 at the age of 89 with his wife, Mary Beth, by his side. He was born in Brenham, Texas to Otto and Anna Peters. He graduated from Brenham High School in 1953 where he excelled in football and track. James’ athletic accomplishments included setting state records in track, receiving All-State and All-American honors in football, and induction into the Brenham High School Football Hall of Honor.
Jim (also known as “Pete” by many) attended Rice Institute on a football and track scholarship. He graduated from Rice in 1957, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. He married Mary Beth Harris, a Rice classmate, on November 3, 1956. They enjoyed a lovely and blessed life together.
Most of Jim’s professional life was spent as a Commercial Real Estate Broker. He worked for a number of years for the Vantage Companies before joining Cushman & Wakefield where he retired as Managing Director. He was an esteemed member of several real estate organizations and served as Chairman of the Board of the Houston Association of Realtors in 1996.
In addition to his professional career, Jim was a very active and faithful member of Fair Haven United Methodist Church for many years.
Jim will be remembered as a man of great integrity, a good friend, a wonderful husband and father, and an exceptional grandfather and great grandfather.
Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Beth, son Mark Peters and wife Anne, daughter Susan Swank and husband Chris; grandchildren, Danielle Gillespie and husband Derek, Blake Peters and wife Courtney, Natalie Peters, and Michael, Griffin and Stephen Swank; great grandchildren, Philip and Teddy Gillespie, and Leighton and Alice Peters; nephews Ronnie Peters and wife Shelly and Jon Peters; and sister in law Ruth LeDoux and husband Glen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Anna Peters, brother Valgene Peters and sons, Mike and Greg Peters.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Fair Haven United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 8, 2024.
