James graduated from Orleans American High School in Orleans, France in 1962, and from the University of Texas at Austin in 1966, where he was in the ROTC. He also received an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1971. James was a U.S. Army veteran, serving 2 years of active duty in Stuttgart, Germany after college and 8 years in the Army Reserves. After active duty, James joined the Eastman Kodak Company, for whom he worked for 25 years. He had a long career in logistics, ultimately becoming a professor of Transportation Economics and Policy at the University of Houston, a position he held until he retired.
James’ career brought him to many countries, including South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia. While working in Santiago, Chile, he met Erika de la Fuente. James and Erika were married in 1979 and shared 44 years of matrimony. Together they had 3 children, James, Erik and Gabriella, and later adopted Erika’s nephew, Cristhian. After living in 5 countries and 4 different states together, James and Erika settled in Houston, TX in 2006.
James is survived by his wife, Erika, children James, Erik, Gabriella and Cristhian, and grandchildren Fernando, Carolina, Emma and Beatriz.
A private family service will be held at Brookside Funeral Home on Saturday, October 14. A larger service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 29 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Burlington, TX.
