James Alton Cooper Sr. started his chapter of life on October 27, 1929. A cotton headed, strapping, energetic, young boy was born to Orabel Pierson and Sanford Cooper in Henderson, Texas. He spent his young days fishing, swimming and playing with cousins in the rolling hills of East Texas. He and siblings were some of the few to survive the New London, Texas school explosion in 1937. James was a tender hearted boy of 9 years when he lost his beloved mother.
As a young man, he learned that school was the stepping blocks but working with his hands fueled his imagination. James became a mechanic, welder, pipefitter, Licensed HVAC operator and home builder. He truly enjoyed taking a motor that sputtered and making it purr. He learned his mechanic craft from his tour of duty in the U.S Army. James spent his off- duty time sharpening his poker skills, so much that he won enough money to buy his first car.
He never spoke the words” I can’t”. He was from the generation of ”I will” and he quietly did. By his “can do” attitude he built a cabin, 2 shops, 2 garages and rebuilt 3 antique cars. These accomplishments were his hobbies. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. How to thread a worm on a hook, grow the best tomatoes, change a tire and how to enjoy the “journeys” in life.
Along his side was his teenage sweetheart and wife of 60 years., Marilyn Laquita Ruddick. Among all his skills and talents his proudest titles were father and Papaw. He leaves behind daughter Camille, sons James Jr., and Gary. Grandchildren Chad Whitfill and wife Brittney; Chelsea Whitfilll, and Alonso Gutierrez and the late James Craig Whitfill. Great grandchildren Jessica 11years and Emmitt 4years. He has been rich with family numerous nieces and nephews. James was blessed with sister’s , Margie Nell Zajonc , Joyce Voytek and brother Tommy Cooper Sr. .
