Jackie was born in Fort Worth, Texas. After graduating from Paschal High School, she attended Texas Christian University where she was a twirler and involved in the drama department. Jackie had a beautiful voice and, during World War II, she helped entertain the troops by singing in the local USO. She moved to Houston in the early 1960s and has been a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church for the past fifty years. Jackie loved serving St. Martin’s as a front desk volunteer, Eucharistic Visitor and as a member of the Lydia Guild and Community of Hope.
Shortly after moving to Houston, Jackie met Robert Baldwin who would become the love of her life and her husband. Many years later, when Robert was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, in her own words she “became a tool of God,” choosing to help others by founding and being heavily involved in the St. Martin’s Alzheimer’s Support Group. Jackie also co-founded The Gathering, a program which provides relief for caregivers of those dealing with memory loss. In her younger years she was an avid tennis player and, with her husband, a world traveler making lifelong friends in Denmark, France and Spain. She also served as president of the Delphian Society. Jackie loved the arts and supported the Houston Pops and Theatre Under the Stars. Animals were also a big part of her life and she truly enjoyed her dogs and horses. Jackie was vivacious and outgoing and generous in every way, always willing to help those in need. She loved to entertain, especially on New Year’s Eve and always welcomed friends who were alone into her family celebrations on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Jackie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of thirty-eight years, Robert Baldwin; her parents, George and Grame Miller; two sisters, Mary Lou Canter and Barbara Lehman; and two of her best friends, Joanne Riddle and Dee Murtaugh. She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Whitmire and her husband, Kenneth; stepson, Robert, his wife, Jannis, and their two children Davis and Elizabeth; niece, Kendal Perryman and her family; and nephews, Les Canter and his family and Niles Lehman and his family.
On behalf of Jackie, her family extends appreciation to her wonderful caregivers, the staff at Methodist Hospital, the Elder Advisory Group and Vitas Healthcare who all worked so hard to help make her final months as comfortable as possible.
The funeral service will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 9th of September, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where The Rev. Martin J. Bastian, Vice-Rector, is to officiate.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church for the Alzheimer’s Support Group or The Gathering; to the American Heart Association (PO Box 841125, Dallas, TX 75284); or to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (5001 Angel Canyon Rd, Kanab, UT 84741).
