Jack Moore, M.D., passed away at home on Sunday, the 20th of November 2011, after courageously dealing for six years with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. He was a devoted husband, father, and friend, as well as a respected physician.
Born on the 25th of February 1923, in Wharton, Texas, he was the son of F.I. and Laura Moore and the youngest of five children. His studies at Rice University were interrupted by World War II and service in the Army Air Corps. After contracting Rheumatic Fever Jack decided he wanted to be a doctor and upon discharge he returned to the University of Texas to complete his undergraduate studies. Jack attended Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana, graduating in 1949. He did his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Jefferson Davis Hospital, Houston. On the 28th of September 1951, he and Neville Aline Hays were married in Christ Church Cathedral.
Jack began his practice of obstetrics and gynecology with doctors Seward Wills and J.T. Armstrong. He taught part-time at Baylor College of Medicine. In 1963, he joined Obstetrical and Gynecological Associates where he remained until retiring in 1995. He was instrumental in the foundation of Woman’s Hospital of Texas and served as its first Executive Director. For three years he served on the Board of Governors of Hospital Corp. of America. He was appointed Clinical Associate Professor of OB/Gyn at Baylor College of Medicine in 1995.
In 1997, the House of Delegates of the Texas Medical Association accorded him the status of Honorary Membership for notable contributions and outstanding service to the profession of medicine and to the people of Texas, a singular honor.
Jack was a member of Christ Church Cathedral and served as Senior Warden of its Vestry in 1976. For a number of years he served with great enthusiasm and pride on the Board of Directors of the 100 Club and was recently honored as a lifetime director.
Jack is survived by his wife, Neville; son, Carter and his wife, Jan; daughter, Andrea; and his beloved dogs, Woodie and Daisy. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Irving and Stanley; and sisters, Kathleen Meyer and Mary Lou Wozniak.
The family would like to express their thanks to Jack’s caregivers Musu Bannister, Remi Coleman and Fatima Akinlotan and the staff of Houston Hospice.
A service of remembrance, in celebration of Jack's life, is to be conducted at half-past five o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 29th of November, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Grand Foyer.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions in Jack’s name be directed to Tulane University School of Medicine, P.O. 61075, New Orleans, LA, 70161-9986; Christ Church Cathedral Endowment Fund, 1117 Texas Ave., Houston, TX, 77002; The 100 Club Inc., 5555 San Felipe St., Ste. 520, Houston, TX, 77056-2733; or Citizens for Animal Protection, 17555 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX, 77094.
