Irene R. Gomez, born to Juan and Virginia Rodriguez in Houston, Texas and resided in South Houston, Texas. She was the oldest of six. She attended Milby High School and attained her GED later in life. She was married to her beloved Serbando Gomez until she became widowed after 64 years of marriage. She passed away after two months of battling with her illness. She was a strong willed person of faith. She survived many obstacles in life with prayer and faith in God.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Serbando Gomez, son Henry (Rick) Gomez and son, Serbando Gomez Jr. Treasuring her memories are her children, Gloria Salazar, David Gomez, Anna Gomez, Sylvia Mendez, and daughter-in-law Alma Romo Gomez, 24 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Her other family members include sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous friends and couples that are like family.
She began her most important role as a wife and mother. She began her career later in life as a Beautician, now known as Hair Stylist. She also began volunteering at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in the Movimiento Familiar Cristiano program for many years; which led to her career of 20 years at the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, sponsoring, preparing and counseling couples for marriage with her beloved Serbando always at her side assisting in her endeavor.
Irene was the matriarch of her family. She was the person who instilled the Catholic faith in her household beginning with prayer, attending church, moral values and definitely family meetings after dinner while gathering at the dining room table. She loved attending church, honoring Holy Days of Obligation, praying the rosary, eating out at restaurants, speaking to her grandchildren, learning about their careers and offering advice. She enjoyed the trips with Serbando visiting other couples while working in the Movimiento Familiar Cristiano program. She had no trouble projecting her feelings for her family. She had a fantastic memory and shared her stories of her past with her family with great pride.
