Hubert A. Kerr, 84, of Houston, Texas, passed away February 20, 2014, after a brief illness. Born December 31, 1929, in Quitman, Arkansas, he moved to Houston in 1950. Hubert was a retired Custom Home Builder after 35 years. He is preceded in death by his father, William Vernon Kerr and mother Martha Leona Kerr of Quitman, Arkansas, and his only grandson, Bryan Lee Belveal, of Houston. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Amy McCarley Kerr, and daughter Linda Kerr Belveal, both of Houston, as well as, sister-in-law Bonnie L. Holmes. He also leaves his beloved brothers and sisters: Bill Kerr and wife Wanda; Charles Kerr; Helen Williams and husband Roy; Mary Ausbrooks and husband Ralph; Wilcher Kerr and wife Lillian; and Reverend Edwin Kerr. He leaves many nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends.
In 1957, Hubert and Amy took square dance lessons and he began calling for Houston area clubs in 1958. A Square Dance Caller for 56 years, he called in the Houston Square and Round Dance Council clubs. He called for Woodland Squares from 1972 through 1992; for the Katy Kountry Kickers from 1977 through 1987; and for Classic Squares, an advanced level of dancers, from 1980 through 2004. Hubert called for the Newport/ Crosby Swinging Squares beginning in 1984 and faithfully taught a new class of dancers every year.
Hubert took great pride in being selected Caller of the Year for the Houston Square and Round Dance Council for 2007. He was a member of the Houston Callers Association and the Caller Lab Quarter Century Club.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 23, from 5-8 pm at the Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway. Funeral services will be Monday, February 24, at 1 pm in the Grand Chapel. Burial will follow at Brookside Memorial Cemetery.
