Helen Doyle passed peacefully in her sleep at her home in Kingwood, Texas, on October 12, 2018 after a long struggle with cancer.
She was born Helen Elizabeth Gilroy on February 26, 1945 in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada to Grace and Ralph Gilroy. She graduated from Mt. Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick in 1966 and received her Master’s in Education from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1967. She married Ted Doyle in 1967 and moved to the U.S. to begin her teaching career at Ovid, New York. After Ted graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, they moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where her first son, Michael, was born in 1970. In 1972 her second son, Robert, was born in Seattle, Washington. She moved with her family to Kingwood in 1983 and resided there the rest of her life.
She joined First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood in 1983 and was very active until the return of her cancer in 2017, serving as an Elder and Deacon. She taught Texas History for many years at Kingwood Middle School, where she was recognized as Teacher of the Year. While at KMS, she coached the Odyssey of the Mind team and led them to two National Championships.
Helen was a lifelong educator and friend to all who met her. She had a caring heart and a graceful nature. She had cancer three times in her life; in 1988, 2006 and 2017. In 1988 she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and given 4 -6 months to live. She lived on for another 30 years to delight of all who knew her.
Foremost she loved her family. Besides teaching and church, she also enjoyed travel, the beach and the company of her many dear friends.
Helen is predeceased by her parents Ralph and Grace and survived by her husband Theodore and sons Michael and Robert and numerous family members in the U.S. and Canada . A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood, 5500 Kingwood Drive, Kingwood on Sunday, October 21st at 3pm.
