Helen Christine Burton was the first of two children born to the late Roland John Burton and the late Elizabeth Lillian Barnes Burton, on August 18, 1947 (St. Elizabeth Hospital), in Houston, Texas. She began her education in HISD at Gregory Elementary School in 4th Ward. The family moved to Settegast in 1954. She attended Settegast Elementary School and graduated from B. C. Elmore High School in 1965 and enrolled at the University of Houston. Helen united with Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church (4th Ward) and was baptized at an early age by the Late Rev. S. M. Weaver. She joined Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor T.J. Compton and served as Jr. Usher, Sr. Usher, Sunday School Teacher, President of Junior Mission, Assistant Secretary for Mission One and Director of the Education Department. On September 24, 1966 she and James Earl Douglas were united in marriage by the late Pastor T. J. Compton. Unto this union two sons were born, Roland James Douglas and Clifton Lawrence Douglas. She began her journey through academia with North Forest ISD in 1967 as Library Assistant at Settegast Intermediate School. She became Secretary at Settegast in 1968. Then in 1972 she became Secretary at B. C. Elmore Middle School. She later served as Secretary for ESSA Director and Secretary for Special Education Director, retiring after 37 years. She served as President of the NFISD Paraprofessional Association for several years. Representing the district nationally, locally and statewide at various conferences and conventions. Helen received national and state certifications. She departed this life on April 12, 2017. She leaves to cherish her memories: a loving and devoted husband, James Earl Douglas; a sister, Willie Marie Burton; two sons, Roland James Douglas (Tarvia) and Clifton Lawrence Douglas; three grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Douglas, Sanaa Natarvia Douglas and Tyler Roland Douglas; godchildren, LaQuinta Edwards and Devon Edwards; a special cousin Barbara Wallace; god brothers, Roy Limbrick (Patricia) and Johnny Limbrick (Laverne); god sister Gwendolyn Harrell; cousin/niece, Sonji Stafford; five sister in-laws, Ester Douglas, Magnolia Hamilton-Roberts, Gladys Charles, Charlesetta Douglas and Vera Douglas; three brother in-laws, Robert Ray Douglas, Russ Myron Douglas and Michael Anthony Douglas; along with a host of relatives and friends.
