She was born in Milton, Nova Scotia on the 17th of June 1921. Gwen received her Bachelor’s degree from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. She worked for Travellers Insurance in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1948, she married Harlan F. Hunt and lived in East Harford, Connecticut. They had one daughter, Linda Louise Hunt. Gwen taught first grade at Goodwin Elementary School in East Hartford, Connecticut for ten years. In 1963, she married Dr. R. Vernon Colpitts and moved to Houston, Texas.
In the early seventies, she was president of the Women’s Medical Auxiliary of Houston. Upon her death, she was an active member of the Bluebird Circle and the Retired Physicians of Houston, Texas, treasurer of the River Oaks Garden Club of Houston, and was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where she taught bible study classes and served on the altar guild for many years. After moving from her home in River Oaks in 2009, she enjoyed her last years at The Hallmark in Houston.
Gwen is survived by her daughter, Lindy van Ekeren of Eindhoven, the Netherlands; brother, Paul Gates and his wife, Barbara, of Dedham, Massachusetts; sister-in-law, Dallas Allison of Charlotte, North Carolina; brother-in-law, Buell Hunt of Wallingford, Connecticut; granddaughters, Sabrina Gwen and her husband, Freddy van Doorn of Aspen, Colorado, and Sheryl Lynn and her husband, Martin van der Broek of Eindhoven, the Netherlands; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The celebration of Gwen’s life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 11th of November, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 4900 Jackwood in Houston, where The Rev. Christopher A. Bowhay is to officiate. Immediately following, the family will receive friends during a reception at the church.
At the conclusion of the reception, an escorted cortege will depart for Memorial Oaks Cemetery, where all are invited to gather with the family during the entombment service.
