Georgina grew up in Havana, Cuba. She traveled all over the island as a young woman. She swam at many of its pristine beaches. In 1960, she left Cuba during the revolution, hoping to return once things were settled. This hope was never realized. She was forced to start a new life in New York, where she eventually married, started a family, worked, and made new friends. She eventually moved to New Jersey, and then to Houston, where she spent the last 50 years of her life in the same home. She enjoyed many friends and families and church life at St. Matthew’s, a church she actually had a hand in starting up along with several other families.
She was fond of gardening, taking care of her own dogs or those of her children, going to the beach, swimming in the ocean or the pool. She herded her kids to various activities in different areas of the city of Houston. She made a career of being a clerk, secretary, receptionist, and administrative assistant for various companies. Her last employment was at Petsmart, where she enjoyed interacting with the customers’ animals brought into the store. Later in life, she enjoyed going places with her husband, Rafael, visiting family and friends all over the US, spending a week at different Texas time shares, visiting wineries, and even going on a Caribbean cruise!
She will be cherished and missed by all her family and friends. Some of the most cherished things everyone will remember is her kindness towards others, her smile, and most memorable her laugh.
Georgina was preceded in death by her parents, Hugo and Juanita Fernandez de Castro, and her grandmother María Martínez. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Rafael Ramon Garcia-Iniguez, her three children Cristina, Rafael, and Jorge, and her two granddaughters Abigail and Yasmin.
A Celebration of Life Service will be Earthman Resthaven Cemetery at 10:00am on Monday, August 31, 2020.
