GEORGE ALAN WELLS, age 70, went to be with the Lord on December 30, 2010 after a courageous battle with complications of emphysema. George was born on July 14, 1940 in Houston, Tx. He was the son of Joseph Tyra Wells Jr., and Arabella Scharnberg Wells and the great-great grandson of James Wells, who fought in the battle of San Jacinto with General Sam Houston’s army. George was preceded in death by his father Joseph Tyra Wells, Jr. and mother Arabella Scharnberg Wells and brothers Joseph Tyra Wells, III and John Bernard Wells. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, he began his career with Union Texas Petroleum. He later worked at Plastic Applicators, Occidental Petroleum, and retired as Assistant Comptroller at Rice University. George was an Eagle Scout, served in the Army Reserves, a longtime member of West University United Methodist Church, and he was a member of the Texas Chapter of Certified Public Accountants. He was a generous contributor to many charities. George enjoyed traveling to Europe. He enjoyed spending time at his lake home in Granite Shoals, Texas. George was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his son, Jeffery Mark Toronjo and wife Christine with their sons Robert, Daniel and Colin of Houston Texas; and daughter Kimberly Wells Greening and her husband Jamie with their daughters, Chelsea and Phoebe of Port Orchard, Washington. The family will be present to receive visitors on Monday January 3, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Forest Park Lawndale funeral home. The funeral service will be held at West University United Methodist Church at 3611 University Blvd., Houston, TX 77005 on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 11 a.m. with graveside services to follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery with Reverends Carol Bruse and Charlie Hall, officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to The Center, 3550 W. Dallas Houston TX 77019. George loved to laugh and give playful advice to his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
