George B. Jackson M.D.

Dr. Jackson was an obstetrician–gynecologist at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital since 1974. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas, and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He received training in obstetrics and gynecology as well as anesthesia, and was board certified in both specialties. Prior to starting his private practice, he held academic appointments at Emory University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Baylor College of Medicine, where he taught Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesia, and Obstetrical Anesthesia.

Dr. Jackson was honored to have been named the 2009 Physician of the Year at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital, where he had been Chair of both the Department of OB-Gyn and the Ethics Committee numerous times. He was a member of the By-Laws Committee and the CEO Advisory Board. He made a brief appearance in the 2010 PBS Special “This Emotional Life” where he was filmed doing what he loved most: delivering babies. Dr. Jackson delivered well over 10,000 babies in his career.

George enjoyed being active in the outdoors, and until a few years ago his passions were hunting, skiing, and scuba diving. These sports were replaced by his love of horses, and the enjoyment he found when his family moved from Houston to Waller to their own piece of heaven at a place they named The M Bar J Ranch. Most recently, George acquired two thoroughbreds, Louie and Bolder, that he was proud to say are the great-great-grandsons of Secretariat. He loved to entertain friends and family, and was known as a great cook and host. He was a loyal friend, devoted husband and father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

Although George had many friends, those he considered the closest are Dr. Zoran and Joan Cupic, Dr. Mel and Millie Anhalt, Mr. Robert C. and Fran Watson, Dr. Vince and Linda Frantz, and Dr. Donald Gibson. The family extends their sincere thanks for the many memories, laughs, and stories that will allow George to live on for years to come. Over many years in practice, George admired his colleagues Drs. M. Bruce Christopherson, Rebecca Luethcke, Clark Hinkley, Barbara Fogiel, and Erica Roberts for their skill, compassion, and dedication to their patients. The family expresses their gratitude for the wonderful care provided by his physicians Dr. George Mammen and Dr. Otto Papp. George loved working with the many nurses, clinical staff, and all other men and women of the varied departments at Memorial Hermann Memorial City.

There are no words to express the family’s gratitude for the dedication and loyalty of George’s “office wives” who took such good care of him so he could care for his patients: Kay Richmond, Marsha LaBorde, Sharon Tyler, Berta Shelton, Jean Cox, Kathy Gaeke, Stacy Flauteros and Anna Adams.

Dr. Jackson is preceded in death by his parents Dr. George W. and Ruth (Gray) Jackson; and his eldest son, George William Jackson.

He is survived by Jennifer Morrow Jackson, his wife of 23 years, and their two daughters, Jordan Leigh and Victoria Barry. In addition, he is survived by his son, A. Paul Jackson; daughter, Elizabeth Sonntag and husband Kurt; grandchildren, George Bryan Jackson, Emily Karyl Jackson, Annaliese Marie Sonntag, Lara Ruth Jackson, and Nicholaus Kenrick Sonntag; former daughter-in-law, Carolyn Jackson Templet and husband Joe. He is also survived by his brothers, William Thomas Jackson and wife Lori, Robert G. Jackson and wife Geri; brother-in-law, John W. Morrow and wife Ann; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service is to be conducted at two o’clock this afternoon on Friday, the 10th of February, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where Chaplain Rick Chandler of Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital is to officiate.

The interment is to immediately follow, via an escorted cortege, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
