Gail Mixon (Everhart) (McCracken), of Houston, TX, went to be with her Lord Jesus on January 9, 2017, peacefully after a courageous battle with a variety of traumatic health issues. She was a determined, brave warrior.
Gail was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on December 28, 1936
She is predeceased by her parents, Sara Holloway Mixon and Gordon Mixon, and stepfather James P. Baker, as well as her brother, Jimmy Mixon. She is also predeceased by husbands Jim Everhart and Will McCracken. Additionally, step daughter Kim Everhart.
Gail had a happy childhood growing up in Helena, Arkansas. She spent many of her vacations revisiting her family and friends in her beloved hometown. She was a proud graduate of Randolph Macon College in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. She was recruited right out of Randolph Macon to work for the Social Security Administration where she spent her entire career. Gail made friends all along the way. She had a special gift for finding common ground with everyone. She was a peacemaker. She loved reading throughout her entire life. She had such a tender heart, especially for animals.
After the death of her first husband, she devoted many years volunteering for the Stephen Ministries through her church, Ascension Episcopal. She loved her church over the many years through all the ups and downs, an active member for over 50 years.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her devoted sister, Sara Lee McPhillips and loving daughter Sara Rhem, son- in- law Marc Rhem and grandchildren Annabelle and David Rhem, of Okemos, Michigan. Additionally, steps sons Trey Everhart and Billy McCracken. Gail's special Calicos, Smokey and Isa were probably the best therapy/medicine she could have during the last 8 years.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful, loving associates at Bayou Vista at Eagle's Trace in Houston, especially Jeri Krauss as their care was exceptional. The "Katy Ladies" (as we fondly called them) from Katy Eldercare, were with her every day for the last year of her life. We say "bless you and thank you" Bayou Vista and Katy Eldercare.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 11 at 11am at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home at 13001 Katy Freeway.
In lieu of flowers please send donations in Gail's name to volunteer services council at the Brenham State supported school at 4001 Highway 6 So., Brenham, TX 77833-9610.
