Fred Durham Grover died peacefully in his sleep on July 17, 2011. Fred was born on March 3, 1982 in Houston, Texas to Karen Lange Grover and Gregory Durham Grover. He graduated from Lamar High School where he was a standout defensive end for the Redskins football team, as well as the team Defensive Player of the Year. After graduating high school, Fred attended Texas A&M University-Kingsville where he was a member of the Javelina football team. He worked for many years for Grover Construction in Houston and more recently for Yeti Coolers in Austin.
Fred will always be remembered for his caring and kind heart. He was a loyal, protective and dependable son, brother, cousin, nephew and friend. Fred loved entertaining friends with his backyard BBQs where his specialties included smoked ribs, redfish on the half-shell, and the occasional smoked goat. Known for his wonderful sense of humor and eternal optimism, Fred was the life of every party with the unique ability to make everyone around him smile. Fred was an avid sportsman who lived for the outdoors, especially fishing in Port O’Connor, Galveston, the Florida Everglades and at the Brazos River Club. He also enjoyed hunting with friends and family at Rancho Encantada, The Dailey Ranch, Los Compadres and duck hunting on the Katy prairie. Fred was a talented carpenter whose legacy will forever remain in the many creations he made for his friends and family.
Fred is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Fred McCaleb Lange and Ann Trueman Lange, his paternal grandfather Walter Durham Grover, and his aunt Shelley Ann Grover-Pletscher. Fred is survived by his mother Karen Lange Grover and William Raymond “Bubba” Fitzpatrick, his father Gregory Durham Grover, his paternal grandmother Claire Marion Kelley Grover, his three siblings Kendall Kelley Grover, Walter Trueman Grover and Laurie Ann Grover, his nieces Cayley Claire Ortega and Addison Michelle Grover, his nephew Roland Mathew Ortega, his girlfriend Kerin LeClair as well as his numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends whom he thought of as his family. He will truly be missed by all.
The funeral service will be held at one o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, July 23rd in the Main Chapel of Forest Park Lawndale, located at 6900 Lawndale in Houston. A grave site service will immediately follow. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends beginning at noon.
