Evelyn Sanford Luckett went to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning, the 31st of August 2016. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the 26th of March 1929, Evelyn moved to New Orleans and then to Shreveport, Louisiana, where she lived throughout her childhood.
She attended Louisiana State University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She graduated with a degree in Physical Education. In college, she met Henry Peyton Luckett, whom she adored. They married in 1949 and had two beautiful children, Peyton and Nan.
Henry’s work took them to various spots around the world, including several years in Saudi Arabia in the 1970s. They eventually landed in Houston in 1961, making it their permanent home. They joined St. Martin’s Episcopal Church shortly after they arrived in Houston, after one meeting with the late Reverend Dr. Tom Bagby. Evelyn was an active member of the church throughout her life, serving as a Sunday school teacher, as President of the Altar Guild, and a long-time member of the CLS Bible Study. Some of her most treasured moments and friends were found in the Bible Study. Evelyn was also involved in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Junior League.
Evelyn was a worldwide traveler, an avid huntress and horseback rider, and a devoted servant of the Lord. She loved spending weekends at Lake Conroe and all things Louisiana. A great day for her involved a good tennis game, a day of fishing, capped off with a glass of port with Henry and her family. With a spring in her step and a twinkle in her eye that could light up even the darkest rooms, she spread joy and happiness to all she knew. She never took a minute for herself, focused solely on bringing peace and love to her family and friends.
In her later years, Evelyn continued her role as a nurturing and loving mother and wife, caring for both her daughter, Nan, until her death, and then her husband, Henry. She was so proud to say that she and Henry had been married for 67 years. In times of struggle, many found strength from the faith that Evelyn shared with so many others. Her life motto was “Pray, pray, pray”, which is what she did until the end.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn Manning Sanford and Frederick Wright Sanford, and by her beloved daughter, Nan Luckett Williams. She is survived by her loyal, devoted husband, Henry Peyton Luckett; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Peyton & Marilyn Luckett; son-in-law, Willoughby C. Williams, Jr. & his wife, Mary; grandchildren and their spouses, Gray & Med Luckett, Lacey & Chris Kruger, Elizabeth & Alexander Dwyer, and Casey & Will Hedges; and her ten great-grandchildren, Peyton, Mason, & Emmy Luckett; Maggie Kruger; Alexander, Lila, Juliet, & Willoughby Dwyer; and Henry & Caroline Hedges.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 8th of September, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr. and the Rev. Mary E. Wilson will officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to join the family for a reception in the Bagby Parish Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests contributions in memory of Evelyn Luckett be directed to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Rd., Houston, TX 77056; or to the charity of one’s choice.
“Well done, good and faithful servant!” Matthew 25:23
