Evelyn Jean Eldridge entered into the world on November 17th, 1940 to Equilla and Henry Eldridge Sr. in Evergreen, Texas, San Jacinto County. Evelyn was one of 14 children. Evelyn was known for her protecting space and anyone she loved.
As a young lady, she was overprotective of her parents and siblings. Evelyn finished her 12th grade year with ease and was very resourceful. She accepted Christ at an early age and loved going to church and attended the family church Spring Hill B.C. until moving to Houston. Even after moving to Houston, she still went back to visit the church for family and friends Day and Cemetery Homecoming.
Evelyn later moved to Houston and started her employment at Lincoln Drive-In where she connected with the love of her life, Vermon Earl Lacy.
On August 10, 1963, Vermon Sr. and Evelyn married and to that union created in love, Vermon Earl Lacy Jr. and Andrea Sheree Lacy.
Evelyn later gained employment with the United States Postal Service in their cafeteria where she had great passion for food. After being employed for others, she and her husband decided to step out on faith and start their own business called Vere’s Daycare.
She went into the partnership with Mr. T. Oliver for years it was great partnership. Later her and husband decided to venture out and open their restaurant called Lacys. Evelyn loved serving her customers on a daily base. Sunday Dinner at the restaurant was definitely a highlight of the café – she loved serving pastors and their wives and church families eating Sunday Dinner at Lacys. Evelyn also enjoyed doing outside caterings, weddings and special events. She served so many over the years. The cafeteria received amazing awards from the city and the late great Marvin Zindler. Evelyn wanted you to feel welcome at all times. Her smile and her hugs made you feel so good.
Evelyn loved her Pastor and her Church family. She was a member of Fontaine for over 50 years, she exercised her gift of cooking for various events at the church. Evelyn loved preparing meals for her family for holidays and spending time with her family.
Evelyn’s long lived life was based on her husband, children, grandchildren, siblings and friends. She was preceded in her death by her Mother – Equilla Eldridge, Father – Henry Eldridge, Husband – Vermon Lacy Sr., Grandson – Tony Gradney, Sisters – Lorene Mc Gowen, Eula B. McBride, Elmarene Eldridge, Brothers - Arthur Lee Eldridge, Curtis D. Eldridge, Henry Eldridge Jr. All preceded her in death.
She loved to cherish her moments and memories her son, Vermon Earl Lacy Jr., her daughter, Andrea Sheree Lacy and her bonus son Ira Evans. Her sisters Annie Ruth West, Margaret Eldridge, Equilla Eldridge. 3 Grandsons &1 Granddaughter, Damion Lacy, JaylenBolden, Vermon, Earl Lacy Jr., Nikki Lunnen; Great Grandchildren, Zaria Bolden, Hudson Lunnen, Kingston Earl Smith, Kemet Lacy, Elias; Goddaughters, Cecily Eldridge Collins, Kay Cooper, Phyliss Johnson, Alacia Taylor, Debra Taylor Bell; Godsons, Darrell Eldridge, Allen Phillips. A Host of nieces and nephews that she absolutely loved and showed so much love her friends that became family had a special place in her heart.
