Evelyn (Meme to her grandchildren) was born on May 5, 1929 in Lincoln, Texas to Frieda (Kunze) and John Hughes. Evelyn attended Pasadena High School and after marriage took the role of traditional homemaker, raising her three sons. After her youngest was in school she took on a variety of jobs. Mainly to stay active, but also a bit rebellious for the times, she worked for the things she wanted. She saved for things deemed frivolous by her husband (novelties like central air). These jobs ranged from catering services on the weekends, to school crossing guard during the week so she could still be close to the boys. She also spent several years as a doctor’s assistant.
No matter the situation, she was always focused on caring for others. She showed her love in the kitchen, and she could love up a storm! She enjoyed entertaining people at home with dinners and game nights. She loved to travel, taking bus tours and sightseeing with Leroy. She collected trinkets and knick knacks (especially items with butterflies) to keep her home warm and inviting. She was a caring soul who always thought of others first. Much to the exasperation of her family on gathered occasions, she was the last to sit down at the table that she prepared with love.
Evelyn was a devoted Christian and loved helping at events in her church. In her younger days she sang in the choir and was a soloist. Even in her twilight years her voice would shine through for those sitting around her in the pews. She was a humble woman, eager to do what was needed and often going beyond.
There will be a graveside service on Thursday, June 8, at 10:00 a.m. at the Brookside Funeral Home.
