Emma "Sue" Elsenbrook passed away peacefully at home in Houston, Texas on the 21st of July, 2011 at the age of 78. Sue was a faithful wife, mother and servant of Christ who is now with her Lord and Savior.
Sue was born in Houston on July 25, 1932 to William and Clara Hiney. She grew up in Houston, attending Reagan High School and meeting her husband, Richard Elsenbrook while they were both in Hogg Junior High. Sue and Richard celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past July 7.
Sue was active in many community and political activities including working in the campaigns of John Connally and Lloyd Bentsen. She served as a special assistant to Senator Bentsen for 23 years and ran his Houston office for his entire senatorial career. An alternate delegate to the historic Democratic National Convention in 1968, she was also a delegate for many years to the Texas State Democratic Convention. Sue loved politics and also served as president of the 414 Democratic Club and Precinct Judge and was active for many years with Democratic organizations.
Fulfilling her civic duty, Sue also served on the Harris County Grand Jury and was the first woman elected Foreman of the Grand Jury in two decades. She served at her church, Garden Oaks Baptist, teaching Sunday School, serving as Treasurer, Finance Officer, Superintendent of Sunday School, and on many other committees.
Sue loved her family most of all. In addition to her husband Richard, she is survived by her children Deborah Wargo and husband Warren, Bobby Elsenbrook and wife Kim, Tom Elsenbrook and wife Lesha and Tim Elsenbrook and wife Ronda, and her grandchildren Joshua Wargo, Abigail & Eric Cunningham, Esther & Josh Jean, Eric , April, Evan, Seth, Elyse, Hannah, Rachel, and Jacob Elsenbrook. Also, sisters-in-law Sybil Hiney, Barbara Ledbetter, and Nancy Driver. Sue was predeceased by her parents and her brother, William Hiney III.
Friends are cordially invited to visit with the family from five o'clock until seven o'clock on Sunday, July 24 at Heights Funeral Home. The celebration of Sue's life will also take place at Heights Funeral Home on Monday, July 25 (her 79th birthday) at 10:00 in the morning with Warren Wargo officiating. Interment will follow in Historic Hollywood Cemetery.
