She was born on the 7th of May 1917, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Elmer H. Storie and Mary Zurcher Storie. She was known to her friends and family as “Lib” or “Libby.”
Elizabeth graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1933 and then from Whitman College in 1937, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. In 1940, she joined the American Red Cross and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. While a member of the Red Cross, she also served in Iceland and The Azores.
On the 12th of July 1946, Elizabeth married B. John Mackin who was a major in the U.S. Army at that time. They made their home in Houston, where John practiced law for many years. John and Lib loved to travel and they visited numerous world wide destinations. They also maintained a home in Rancho Santa Fe, California, which was a much-loved retreat. Mrs. Mackin served on the Whitman College Board of Overseers from 1985 until 2000 and thereafter received Emeritus status. She was active in many charitable and community organizations and was an avid and accomplished golfer and bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John, to whom she was married for 57 years; and her brother and sister-in-law, John A. and Virginia Storie. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service, celebrating her life, is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 14th of December, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
