Mrs. Elizabeth Anne "Bettie" Gaines

Elizabeth Anne “Bettie” (Wittlinger) Gaines (affectionately called “Bettie Boop”) passed away on Wednesday, the 5th of September 2012. She was born in Cambridge City, Indiana, on the 6th of October 1916.

Bettie, along with her parents, brother and sister, moved to Houston in 1929. She attended Milby High School in Houston and Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia.

Bettie traveled extensively and treasured her mementos from all her travels. She loved to decorate and her home reflected her flair for decorating. She loved going and doing, being with friends, and loved dressing up and having fun. Bettie will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and infectious laugh. She could tell a joke with the best of them….when she remembered the punch line! She will be so greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is predeceased by her parents, C. B. and Fredrick M. “Witt” Wittlinger; her brother, Robert C. “Bob” Wittlinger; sister-in-law, Kris Wittlinger; brother-in-law, Clif Barnett; first husband, Brigadier General Gregory Weissenberger; husband, Carroll M. Gaines; and nephew Robert C. Wittlinger, Jr.

Bettie is survived by her son, Gregory “Jock” Weissenberger; daughter-in-law, Jacie; granddaughter, Gretchen; great-grandson, Michael; grandson, Josh Buell and his wife Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Samantha, Owen, and Jon, all of California; her sister, Cebe Sue Barnett; niece, Cebe Sue “Suzi” Jones and her husband J.M. Jones; great-nieces, Ashley May Beauregard, McKinley Anne Williams and their families, all of Houston; niece, Anne (Wittlinger) Kelley and her husband Scott; nephews, Mark Wittlinger and family, and Paul Wittlinger. Additionally, she leaves many wonderful friends.

The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge all who cared for Bettie along her journey: her friends and caregivers at Treemont and Memorial City Health & Rehabilitation Center, and especially her caregivers at Houston Hospice for all their compassion and help.

A celebration of Bettie’s life is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 13th of September, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

At a later date, Bettie’s family is to join her son Jock and his family in California to lay Bettie to rest.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that donations in Bettie’s memory may be directed to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX, 77030; or to the charity of one’s choice.
