Dorothy “Dottie” May Pirrung passed away November 2, 2018 at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital at the age of ninety. Born July 5, 1928 in Shippingport, Pennsylvania and as a toddler adopted by Ralph and Edith Candler of Columbus, Ohio. While attending Ohio State University she met and married James “Jim” Pirrung of Columbus, Ohio on June 18/, 1948. She was mother and housewife to Jim first, but very active in Jim and their children’s activities. She played Tennis with Jim and bowled on a Women’s Bowling league and at one time was the secretary of the WIBC. She was a den mother for cub scouts and cookie chairman for the girl scouts. Dorothy was also chairman of the Denver Democratic Party during JFK’s election.
Dorothy and Jim retired and moved to Freeport, Texas where they quickly settled into the Freeport Community. They delivered Meals on Wheels and participated in City Council. Dorothy was honored by the city when they gave her the Women of Distinction Award in 2014 for her humanitarian efforts in Freeport. Dorothy also was secretary and treasurer of the VFW and was elected President of the Ladies Auxiliary. Dorothy and Jim entertained and feed the power squadron’s annual gathering at their home.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, spouse Jim, and son Charles. She is survived by six children; Mari Baldwin, Paul Pirrung, Joyce Lewis, Jeanne Peacock, Terri Pirrung, Diana Vaniel and their spouses: seventeen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday. November8, 2018 from 5pm to 8pm with a rosary service at 7pm at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 10am Friday, November 9, 2018 at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home with interment to follow at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery.
