Dorothy Jean Baxter, born on October 23, 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away on April 15, 2024, in Houston, Texas. She was a beloved mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, mother-in-law and friend. Dorothy was a woman of strong faith who dedicated her life to serving God and others.
Before Dorothy’s illness, she spent Sundays at Bible Way of Holiness Church, where she found joy in singing and praising God. Known for her warm smile and willingness to help, Dorothy’s love for her family was evident in every interaction.
She married James Baxter in June 1959, and this union blessed them with four sons: Kenneth Baxter (Michelle), James Baxter, Stephen Baxter and Jeffrey Baxter (Crystal). James preceded her in death on February 27, 1987. In her professional life, Dorothy worked as a Lab Technician at the Medical Clinic of Houston for over thirty years. Her dedication and expertise left a lasting impact on her colleagues and patients. In addition to her career, Dorothy was passionate about cooking, turning simple ingredients into culinary delights. Her pound cakes and cookies were legendary. Dorothy also enjoyed shopping and spending time with her family.
Dorothy’s parents preceded her in death, Edgar and Tisha Griffin; her brothers Irvin, Bennie and Emmanuel Griffin; sisters, Donna Clark, Barbara Slatter and Beulah Smith; and her brother-in-law, Rev. Dr. Willie Jones. Dorothy leaves to cherish two brothers, Rev. Charles Griffin (Mary) and Louis Griffin; one sister, Mary Jones; brother-in-law, Pastor Leon Slatter; sister-in-law, Joyce Griffin; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews and loved ones.

Dorothy's visitation will be on April 25, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at New Mount Calvary MBC 4711 Kelley St. Houston, Texas 77026. The funeral will follow at noon. The committal will be held from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. at Paradise Cemetery North 10401 W. Montgomery Rd. Houston, Texas 77088
