Donald Lee Cagle was born on October 23, 1940 in Houston, Texas, the son of Lee Cruce Cagle and Norma Cagle Koerschgen Gummelt. He died on September 10, 2021, in Houston. Don was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and friend.
Don met his future wife, Karen Knight when they were in grade school together in Austin, but through the years, life’s travails separated them and each married other partners. Years later, they reunited and married in 1979. They made their home and family together in Katy, until Karen’s passing in 2017.
Don was a life-long learner, and he enjoyed increasing his knowledge about everything from chemistry to electronics to sports to human nature. Don never went to college, but his love of teaching, as well as the knowledge and experience he gained working for organizations like Tracor, Honeywell, the U.S. Army, and the University of Texas at Austin, equipped him to serve as both mentor and teacher of many people, including quite a few engineers with advanced degrees.
Don was a quiet, peaceful person, but when necessary, he was willing to take action, everything from fighting forest fires in California to serving on the front lines in Germany during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
In retirement, Don spent much of his time in Bible study, increasing in both knowledge and appreciation of the life of Jesus Christ and His followers. He enjoyed sharing his thoughts on the Scriptures with others and was generous with both time and worldly goods. He looked forward to joining Karen in the life hereafter.
A private graveside ceremony will be held for Don at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery in Houston.
In addition to his wife and parents, Don was preceded in death by daughter, Laura, and son, Mark Moellendorf. He leaves behind three sons, Shane Cagle (Amber Ward) of Houston, David Moellendorf and Lee Cagle, both of Austin; two sisters, Kathleen Bergeron of Salisbury, North Carolina, and Tina Tout (Jamie) of Austin; sister-in-law, Kathie Grieve(Jim) of Austin, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all across the country.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army or Saint Jude Children’s Hospital.
