Don DeWayne Lacy, age 75, of Magnolia, Texas passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020. Don was born July 10, 1945 in Kilgore, Texas to Mervin Hubert and Marie Lacy. He was the youngest brother to Jimmy Lacy, Sr. He graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1953 then received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1983. His passion was playing drums; doing so nearly all his life up until only a few years ago. Don started out in the mid-60's as a drummer at Houston's Esquire Ballroom on Hempstead Highway. He then went to Nashville and played with great names as Jack Greene and Jeannie Seely. It was Nashville where Lacy decided to become a reserve police officer, his second passion. He started his police career with Harris County Constable's Office and then moved to Precinct 4 Constable's Office. His career also included being a Chief of Police in Willis and then retirement from Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in 2010 as a Lieutenant.
The music never stopped as he continued with the Texas Throwdown Band. Lacy also played drums for the Little York Blues Band. He was so well known that in 1988 The Associated Press printed a story. Lacy being a drummer depended on his hands and was very careful with them. His handshake was probably what was most memorable; reach out your hand and he took your finger to shake your hand. Don's hobbies included working benefits for fellow officers, friends, and family when needed. He loved helping others as often as he could.
Don is preceded in death by Maureen, his parents and brother, Jimmy. To honor and cherish his memory, Don is survived by his children, Donece Berry, Loretta Davis, and DuRon Johnson; grandchildren, Brandie Walley, Joshua Morley, Mikey Berry, and Angelyn Berry; great-grandchildren, Zachary Morley, Aubrey Morley, Everleigh Walley, Stetson Morley, and Colt Morley.
A visitation for Don will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. with a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. A committal service will immediately follow at 11:30 a.m. All services will be held at Brookside Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039.
