“Smitty” as he was referred to by friends and family was baptized and accepted Christ at an early age at Cannon Missionary Baptist Church under the pasturage of the late reverend L.V. Adams where he was active as a member of the Youth Group and Usher Board. Smitty received his formal education in the Houston Independent School District being in the first graduating class from Barbara Jordan High School and then went on to obtain his Associates degree from South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. After graduating from college Smitty relocated back to Houston and began his career in the medical field at M.D. Anderson Hospital, The Methodist Hospital, and later at TIRR Memorial Hermann where he worked until his medical retirement.
Smitty always had a welcoming smile, open arms and a giving heart. He always believed that families should be close and supportive of one another and for some of us he was always there when needed. He enjoyed a quiet and simple life fishing, barbequing with close childhood friend and Brother-in-law Louis Hooper, and supporting his Houston sports teams, especially the Houston Astros. He also treasured spending quality time with his nephew Damon and great-nephew Nolege who brought him great joy.
Smitty departed this life on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents Novella and Y.Z. Smith, his sister Bessie Deloris Perkins, his brothers John Murphy Brown Jr, Glen Otis Smith and Nathaniel Smith.
Smitty leaves to cherish his memory his beloved sister Vivian Ann (George Steed) and devoted brother Ben (Doris Smith), loving aunt Dora Johnson, caring cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives and friends.
