

As a young man, David excelled in scholastics and was a member of the National Honor Society. He graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena, Texas and earned an appointment to the United States Naval Academy.
While postponing his appointment, he attended Rice University and the University of Houston. Shortly thereafter, he decided to forgo college and joined the United States Navy where he attended nuclear power school. He was very proud of his military service.
David enjoyed writing; creating several concrete poems and some short stories. He pursued these interests on his own and while a member of a local writers guild. He also studied creative writing and journalism while a student at the University of Houston.
His other interests included music, Christianity, theoretical physics, and mathematics.
He is predeceased by his father, Norman Ruland, stepmother, Mona Ruland, and stepbrother John Sheahan.
He is survived by his mother, Alandra Shepler Ruland, sisters Leslie(husband Ron) and Valerie Markham(husband Jimmie), brother Patrick Ruland, stepbrother Denis Sheahan, as well as several nephews and a niece.
A viewing will be held from 9:00am to 10:00am on Monday, August 29th, 2022 in a state room of the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079. A brief graveside service will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a contribution be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
