Dan was born on November 24th, 1928 to John Alfred and Elenora Zabcik in Barclay, Texas. He graduated Rosebud High School as its 1946 valedictorian. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in August of 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. After college, Mr. Zabcik served first in the U.S. Army and then as an officer the U.S. Air Force until he was discharged in August of 1953 after 2 ½ years on Okinawa and having earned a Korean Service Medal. He then worked for Lockwood & Andrews, a Houston based engineering firm and then joined Metallic Building Company, a Houston-based Metal Building Manufacturer, starting his long and ultimately highly accomplished career in that industry.
Mr. Zabcik married Joyce C. Wells of Port Arthur, Texas in April of 1957 and had three children: Carol, Dan and Bob. After starting their family in Hobbs, New Mexico, they relocated to Houston after two years and eventually settled in the Cypress-Fairbanks area of Houston. After Joyce’s death in 1986, Dan became reacquainted with and married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Hancock, also of Rosebud, in 1987 thus becoming stepfather to Millard, Mary, Larry and Arthur Hancock.
After Dan retired from NCI Building Systems in 1991, he served on the Board of Directors of that same company until 1998. All told, his career with NCI spanned more than three decades, helping to lead that company from humble beginnings to an industry giant. After his retirement, Rosemary and Dan shared a beautiful life together traveling and sharing their mutual loves such as hiking, golf, attending UT Football games in Austin and spending time with their nine grandchildren: Chris, Nick and John DeWitt; Ryan and Kathryn Zabcik; Monika Zabcik; Jorel Hancock; Haley and Ashley Hancock.
Having grown up on a farm near Rosebud, Texas, Dan was an outdoors man through and through. As an adult, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, birding and hiking in mountain, desert and coastal settings. The call of the wild found always his ready answer and he had many friends and family members with whom he shared these activities.
The family wishes to thank the administrators and care givers at Silverado Cypresswood Senior Care for the selfless love and devotion that was shown to Dan during his five years there.
A memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 27th of August in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in Dan’s memory may be directed to Ocker Bretheren Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 806, Rogers, Texas 76569.
