Claude Carr Cody IV

Claude Carr Cody IV passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, the 8th of February 2022, at the age of 70. He was born in Houston on the 1st of November 1951, to Dr. Claude Carr Cody III and Muriel Fursteneau Cody.

Claude graduated from Memorial High School in 1969, where he was a member of an All-State swimming team. He then attended Vanderbilt University where he continued competitive swimming and joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity where he served as its Treasurer. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics in 1974 and earned his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976.

Upon graduation, Claude began working as an investment manager at American General in Houston. He would then go on to work for many years for AIM/Invesco under the leadership of Ted Bauer and Gary Crum. Following his time at AIM, Claude worked for Roger H. Jenswold & Co., where he served as one of its Vice Presidents and later purchased the firm with his cousin Melville L. Cody, Jr. The firm became part of the Capstone Financial Group, where he worked until his retirement in 2016, concluding his career with more than 40 years of experience. Claude distinguished himself among his peers by earning Chartered Financial Analyst certification. He also served frequently as a guest lecturer and presenter at many universities and conventions across the country. Remembered by his colleagues for his knowledge, storytelling, and loyalty to others, he will be greatly missed by those who worked with him.

Claude met Anne Turpin in 1983, and they were married on the 20th of September 1986, in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The couple welcomed three children, Carr, Braxton, and Catherine. He actively attended and documented their activities with great enthusiasm and care, almost always capturing them with his trusty digital camera. To all who knew him well, he frequently shared about their lives to friends and always reminded those around him of how proud he was of each of his children.

Involving himself in his children’s activities went beyond photography. He coached youth baseball for each of his children and encouraged their growth in sports, academics, and the arts. As an Eagle Scout himself, Claude was actively involved in the Boy Scouts. Instilling its values, Claude served as a loyal leader in Pack 55 and Troop 55 at St. John the Divine for many years. Teaching the Personal Management Merit Badge, earning his Boy Scout Lifeguard distinction in Washington’s Puget Sound, attending the 2010 National Jamboree with Braxton, and hiking Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico three times were among his favorite memories as a leader. Witnessing his two sons earn the Eagle rank was a great joy for Claude, who participated in high adventure trips across the country with them over the years.

After his retirement, Claude devoted much of his time to the video and photography of sports at Episcopal High School. Claude captured athletes in football and wrestling for over 14 years. Though he spent time on the sidelines for both sports, Claude was committed most to Episcopal Wrestling program. Spending his afternoons at every home and away match, he often traveled with the team to out of town tournaments with the team on many winter Saturday mornings.

He also enjoyed biking with his sister Carol and brother-in-law Charlie and exercising regularly at River Oaks Country Club, where he was a member for over 40 years. He greatly enjoyed spending his time getting into shape over the last couple of years. Additionally, he served with Carol on the Board of Visitors and guest lectured at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Serving in this capacity helped Claude continue his love of sharing his knowledge and expertise with others.

Claude is survived by his wife of 35 years, Anne Turpin Cody; his children, Claude Carr Cody V(Alexandra), Braxton Turpin Cody (fiancée Alaina), and Catherine Anne Cody; and his sister, Carol Cody Herder (Charlie); niece, Sarah Herder Nathan and nephew Charles Henry Herder III (Tina). He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Claude Carr Cody III and Muriel Fursteneau Cody.

A memorial service is to be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 19th of February, in the sanctuary of The Church Of St. John The Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where The Rev. Dr. Doug Richnow, Priest Associate, is to officiate.

Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
