Carolyn was known for her kindness, hospitality, and organizational abilities, and served in a variety of roles using those gifts. She worked as an Executive Secretary at Progressive Farmer Magazine, parent magazine of Southern Living, and appeared on the cover in 1957. Later she was an Executive Assistant in the coal industry and achieved special national certification in that role. She also worked as a Church Administrator and Pianist, and helped found an annual, community wide presentation of Handel’s Messiah in her hometown that continues to this day.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey Earl Hayne and Alton Josie (Clark) Hayne, brother, Herman Shepherd Hayne, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Hayne Best, sister-in-law, Gretel Sides Hayne, brother-in-law, Hillery Best, and her husband of 62 years, James (Jim) Lewis Smith. She is survived by son David Brian Smith (Dee); daughter Lisa Smith Sullivan (A.J.); grandchildren Amy Allene Smith, Brian Hayne Smith(Christin), and Anna James Sullivan; great-grandchildren Luther Hayne Smith, and Benjamin Laurel Smith.
