Candida Socorro Lacombe

Candida Socorro Lacombe, of New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023, in Houston, Texas. She was a native of Matagalpa, Nicaragua and born on December 27, 1930, to Adolfo and Candida Lopez.

The minute Candida arrived in New Orleans, in the early 1950’s, she immediately knew that she had found her dream city. As a 19-year-old, limited in the English language, she was embraced by the spirit and mystery of the Crescent City.

Candida was not one to waste a moment, for there were stories to tell, and as always, she was very convincing in her point of view. She enjoyed the ever-flowing celebration and mayhem of the city and found that the true NOLA natives were fascinating. Then it happened, a tall handsome Navy veteran, Korean war, named Thomas J. Lacombe entered her world and then a lifetime union was formed. On January 11, 1958, they were married at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Exactly nine months later, Candida gave birth to their one and only child, Thomas J. Lacombe, Junior.

One of Candida’s other proudest moments was on May 5, 1965, when she became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. She felt strongly about public service, and as an American citizen, for her it was important to contribute back to society. She found a professional home at the Port of New Orleans where she served the state for 18 years till her retirement on June 26, 1987.

She then moved to Houston, Texas to be closer to her grandchildren. She was an active “MawMaw”, and always on the move. At any given time, we had to ask the question, “Where’s Candida today?”. Whether it was on a cruise, a trip to Lourdes, Turkey or even Mexico, she was a non-stop observer of life. It is this generous passion for life that fueled Candida, and it is in her memory that she expects us all to play it forward.

Candida is survived by her son, Thomas J. Lacombe, her 2 granddaughters, Aubrey Lacombe, Lindsey Lacombe, the memory of her grandson Evan Lacombe, and her 2 sisters, Myriam Lopez, Imelda Ward and 2 brothers, Paulino Lopez and Adolfo Lopez. Her wonderful spirit will be celebrated on Saturday July 8, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Heights Funeral Home at 1317 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008.

Lacombe, Junior.

Uno de los otros momentos de mayor orgullo de Cándida fue el 5 de mayo de 1965, cuando se convirtió en ciudadana naturalizada de los Estados Unidos de América.
