She is survived by her husband of forty-two years, Morton A. Cohn and their loving and devoted daughters; Kirby Cohn McCool and her husband Scott, Lindsay Cohn Holstead and her husband Rand, and Courtney Cohn Hopson and her husband Bo; and her pride and joy, her grandchildren; Lane, Khaki and Thomas McCool, Mia and Randall Holstead and Sloan and Bo Hopson. She is also survived by her sister Sandra Ann “Mimi” Smith Dompier and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, the late Robert Everett “R.E. Bob” Smith and Vivian Leatherberry Smith; and by her niece, the late Sandra Ann Austin.
A lifelong Houstonian, she attended and graduated from St. John’s School. She attended Randolph-Macon Women’s College and then transferred and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She continued to be an avid supporter of the Theta Antique Show throughout her life.
She came from a family that loved this city deeply and she chose to continue their tradition of philanthropy by contributing greatly to its civic and cultural landscape while never seeking recognition. She served or previously served as trustee or director of numerous organizations including: Vivian L. Smith Foundation, Communities in Schools, Houston, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Glassell School of Art, Southwestern University, Riverway Bank, Dress for Success, Houston (founding member), Friends of Nursing at St. Luke’s Hospital (founding member), Episcopal High School, The Post Oak School and The Chinquapin School. There were many organizations that she loved and supported but was particularly interested in helping newer and smaller ones get off the ground.
Although the last few years Bobby struggled with her health, she never stopped putting others first. She saw the good in everyone, and was the true meaning of unconditional love. Bobby had amazing strength and an incredibly strong will. She had impeccable style, while always maintaining her sharp wit and remarkable sense of humor. She loved her family and friends, her books, her dogs and the Times and Mensa crossword puzzles, which she often did in ink.
The family desires to express their deepest appreciation and gratitude to Dr. James T. Willerson, Dr. Tom Solis, Dr. O. H. “Bud” Frazier, Dr. John Stroehlein, Mae Thomas, and the entire staff from the 23rd floor Terrace, for their outstanding care, dedication and love over the years. Also, the family wishes to acknowledge the unwavering love and support of Howard Lewis, Rosa Aguirre, Cynthia McElveen, Carolyn Hofker, Sam Jones, Karen Capone and the wonderful caretakers that she had during the last few months.
A memorial service, to celebrate Bobby’s life, is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 20th of September, in the Sanctuary of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Dr. Tom Pace, Senior Pastor, is to officiate.
Prior to Monday’s memorial service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in Bobby’s memory may be directed to Communities in Schools, Houston, 1235 North Loop West, Suite 300, Houston, Texas 77008; Friends of Nursing at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, 6720 Bertner Avenue, Mail Code 3-206, Houston, Texas 77030; Dress for Success, Houston, 3915 Dacoma Street, Houston, Texas 77092; or to the charity of one’s choice.
