His beloved wife of 57 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Mason, preceded him in death. Col. Mason is survived by his son, William "Bill" Mason and his wife Pam Mason, daughter, Sandra B. Mason and her partner Sandy LeBlanc. He is also survived by one grandson, Michael R. Mason, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Col. Mason had a distinguished 3-decade-long military career, including flying P-38 fighter planes with the 82nd Fighter Group as Commanding Officer during WWII combat missions, from his base in Foggia, Italy. He was the recipient of many decorations, including the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He thoroughly enjoyed attending annual 82nd Fighter Group reunions, and was an active member of the QB's organization.
Friends were invited to a visitation with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Waltrip Funeral Directors in Houston. A memorial service was conducted by Reverend Ken Richter on Saturday afternoon, April 21st at 2:00 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Houston, 10840 Beinhorn Road. Graveside services with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 9182 Honor Guard, and fly-by honors by members of the QB's, followed in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway.
A loving husband and father, an officer and a gentleman, he will always be remembered with great love and pride by his family and friends.
