Barbara Beardmore Adams departed this life on the 21st of January 2014. She was born on the 1st of May 1940, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert F. Beardmore. At the age of 7, she moved with her family to Houston, where her father became a Vice-President of Gulf Oil.
She attended Houston schools until she graduated from Lamar High School and then enrolled at the Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Virginia. As a mathematics major, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas. She then became a member of the early generation of computer programmers in Houston.
Barbara worked for Brown and Root, then for M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and then for Exxon Production Research. At Exxon, she was associated with research for offshore operations when she met Roy Adams. Barbara and Roy were married in 1968 and soon departed for his first overseas assignment in Australia.
After another Houston assignment, they began a series of overseas assignments which geographically ranged from North Africa to Scandinavia to Southeast Asia. Barbara adapted well to these varied environments. Her husband referred to her as “a good wife, a good mother, and a good homemaker in six countries.”
After a total of 23 years overseas, they retired to return to Houston. Barbara resumed her volunteer work at Texas Children’s Hospital and devoted more than 11,000 additional hours there, where she was named Volunteer of the Year for 2012, before she encountered serious medical problems early in 2013.
During her years as a volunteer, Barbara served as President of the TCH Volunteer Auxiliary in 2004-2005 and later as Financial Officer for the Auxiliary Board. She was also President of the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. She thus devoted a major portion of her life to the volunteer effort.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Roy Adams and her son, Russell Adams.
