Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Jones Funeral Home Chapel, 1101 Main St., Franklin, LA., from 10:00 AM until memorial service at 11:00 AM. Officiating service, Elder Donald Lanceslin of Hines Memorial Church.
Nathan Sullivan Brown, was born September 11, 1959 in Suffolk, Virginia to Robert Lee and Catherine V. Brown.
He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1977. In High School, Nathan excelled at many things including Band where he played the Clarinet, Track and Field; he was a discus thrower and a record breaking shot putter, earning All State honors, he also ran the 100 yard dash once, quite a feet for such a big man. He also excelled at weight lifting and competed for his High School Team. But he excelled the most in the sport of Football and was All District, All State, one of the Top 25 players in the state and the most valuable player for the city of Suffolk for two years in a row 1976 & 1977. He was recruited by many colleges to play football but eventually choose to attend the University of Maryland in College Park Maryland on a Football Scholarship where he also studied business. After leaving Maryland in 1981 he had brief stints trying professional football with teams in Washington & Kansas City, but after injuries derailed a football career he again choose business and ran and owned many successful business including Fortune 500 companies. He lived in Maryland and worked in the Washington DC area for many years. Nathan holds degrees in Business from Columbia State University, Theology from The Virgin Island Bible College and MS and PHD from Tiffin University in Business Management. Nathan moved to the Island of St. John in the US Virgin Islands in the late 1980's and served as Youth Minister for The Cruz Bay Baptist Church and as a Teacher for St. John Christian Academy, as well as owning his own businesses: Delivery 4U & Chefs 4U a provisioning and catering company that catered to visitors to St. John including the rich and famous who visited the island.
Around 2001 Nathan returned to his home town of Suffolk just before his fathers death to live with his aging Mother, there he established VA Investments LLC, a real estate development company as well as other companies.
Nathan was selected to the Who's Who list of American Business Executives as President or VA Investments and eventually retired as CEO of the company. Nathan has owned or been an executive running more than 20 different companies in his career in many different industries.
In 2009 Nathan moved to Louisiana, retired from business in 2010 and joined Hines Memorial COGIC where he remained a member till his death. Nathan was a Bible Scholar and enjoyed teaching and studying the Bible. Nathan loved the Lord and believed in His word since he was 13 and was saved and baptized at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Suffolk where he grew up as member and served as a youth choir member, usher and youth leader for the summer program.
He had many interests included family, was a certified scuba diving, reading, and loved the word of God. He also love islands and has traveled and visited more than 10 different countries. Nathan was also known for the many inspirational post he posted daily for all of his friends and family to enjoy.
Memories of Nathan Brown also known as "Big Nate" to many will forever remain in the hearts of companion and caregiver, Ann Hunt of Verdunville, LA, a brother Larry L. Brown (Alexis) of Philadelphia, PA, a sister Dorothy Riddick of Suffolk, VA, two step children Derrick (Mia) Hunt and Tatiana Hunt both of Atlanta, GA, one grandson, Bravery Hunt, three nephews and two nieces.
Nathan was preceded in death by his parents Robert Lee Brown and Catherine V. Brown and both his maternal and parental grandparents.
