James (Jim) Wisman, 84 of Hot Springs died on March 1, 2023. He was born in Camden, Michigan, the son of Elgie and Audrey Wisman. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Michigan and his Master’s degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.
He began his teaching career at Brandywine High School, Niles, Michigan where he taught Chemistry and Physics for 3 years. In 1964, he became an instructor at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where he taught hundreds of students Chemistry during his 34 year career.
He was active for many years with the Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations. He was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Boy Scouts and the Thanks Badge by the Girl Scouts for his many years of volunteer service. He also participated and later became an instructor in the Woodbadge adult training course for the Boy Scouts.
He had many and varied interests. He had his private pilot's license, amateur radio license, was an avid gardener, and volunteered at several state parks and wildlife refuges while traveling throughout all 50 states. He was a life-long Methodist.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Claire; a daughter Elizabeth, her husband Randall Harness and grandson Adam; one sister and her husband, Judie and Norman Rubel, 4 nephews, their wives, children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jay Wisman, and his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 10 am on March 10th at First United Methodist Church in Hot Springs with Pastors J. J. Galloway and Michael Mattox officiating.
