Delbert D. Garner, 81, of Hot Springs, departed this life on October 30, 2023, from T- cell lymphoma. He was born March 25, 1942 to Herbert and Brada Garner. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother; Ron Garner, niece; Gaye Simmons, and great nephew; Graham Gardner.
In life Del was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend who cherished spending time with his family. He was a remarkable man who drew people to him effortlessly with his charisma and magnetic personality. As an educator, Del was admired as much for his fairness, patience, and integrity, as he was for his outstanding leadership qualities. His many years as a teacher, coach and principal of Southwest Jr. High, as well as a Deputy Superintendent for the Hot Springs School District, offered him the opportunity to make an indelible impression on the many young people he encouraged, disciplined, and mentored. He influenced and impacted many lives over his career.
After retirement, Del was able to enjoy several years pursuing his interests. Having graduated from OBU on a basketball scholarship, he utilized his talents to play in senior leagues and was well known for his precision long shots. He had an avid interest in archery and belonged to the Lakeside Archery Club where he collected many trophies for his competition skills in the shooting of traditional recurve bows. He also loved demonstrating and introducing archery to kids. He taught Hunters Education and served as a Lake Patrol Deputy Sheriff during the summers on Lake Hamilton.
The greatest passion in Del’s lifetime was his love of fishing. Any body of water that looked as though it held fish beckoned to him, and he was always ready with rod and reel in hand. He helped organize the Ouachita Bass Club competitions for several years and served as an ambassador for several bait companies. His favorite challenges were his fishing trips on the river with friends. He excelled at catching the “big ones” and loved sharing these escapades through his exceptional gift of storytelling. His wit, infectious laugh and sense of humor were always evident. Del loved life and embraced each adventure. He valued his family and friendships, and those fortunate to know him were richly blessed.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rebecca Garner, his son, Derek Garner (Robyn), granddaughters, Grace, Maggie, and Aubrey; his daughter Kristen White, and granddaughter Ella; his twin, Delvis Garner (Ginny), sister-in-law Nell Garner; nieces Jan Lawson (Gary) and Jill Gardner (Bill) and Lonnie Wagner, lifetime friend and fishing partner.
