Gloria Louise Forster McEvilley was born September 1st, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. She is the daughter of the late Archbishop Donald Forster and May Forster. “September Morn” is the nickname her father gave her. She was the third of 8 children – Violet, Donald, Eleanor, Albert, Reginald, Marjorie and Eileen. She graduated from Girls Commercial High School.
On September 4th, 1949, Gloria married Emmitt Arturo McEvilley. They shared a marriage of 42+ years until the time of Emmitt’s passing on February 1st, 1992. From their union Gale Patricia, Michael Alan and Gloria Jean were born. Gloria worked as a Teacher Aide at Public School 159 in Brooklyn, and that experience led her to attend Pace University where she earned an Associate Degree in Audio Visual Technology.
Gloria was an avid fan of figure skating. She followed some of the skating greats such as Peggy Fleming and enjoyed both watching televised competitions and participating in recreational skating at outdoor rinks during the winter months. She was also a member of “The Clusters”; a women’s social group that traveled, attended Broadway musicals and plays, and frequented restaurants. Gloria and Emmitt also traveled, visiting Barbados, Europe, Hawaii, as well as making trips to visit family across the continental United States.
In 1984 Gloria and Emmitt retired and relocated to Fayetteville, North Carolina. They joined and became devoted members of St. Paul’s in the Pines Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir and served as head of the Altar Guild for 25 years. In 2015 Gloria relocated to Aldie, Virginia to reside with her son Michael and his wife Princess. In 2017 Gloria relocated to the greater Charlotte, North Carolina area, eventually settling in at her new home at Carillon Assisted Living in Mint Hill, North Carolina. She continued to be a “spark of energy” positively impacting her co-residents, and making new friends that she enjoyed in watching TV, playing games, “debating” (or should we say “setting folks straight”), and enjoying life and each other’s company.
At 93 years young Gloria entered into life eternal on October 23rd, 2019. She was preceded in death by her husband Emmitt. She is survived by her daughters Gale McEvilley and Gloria (Samuel) Moore, her son Michael (Princess) McEvilley, her granddaughters LaChe’ McEvilley, Angelique Moore, and Gabriella Moore, her grandson Michael (Amy) McEvilley II, and her great granddaughter Zuri Moore; her siblings Donald Forster, Eleanor Turner, Albert Forster, Reginald Forster (Barbara), Marjorie Peterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, and friends.
Gloria enjoyed being around people of all ages and liked to make them laugh. She had a strong sense of faith that she relied on as the answer to those things we cannot understand or explain. Mom will be missed dearly.
