My Auntie Chang
I remember her kind tone of voice.  I remember making pizzas and pressing the dough onto the pan with her in the kitchen.  I remember how she dutifully cared for her home.  We would go over the carpet with tape everyday to pick up every bit of lint.  I remember how she would buy me the pink Japanese candy with the little toy, from the vegetable truck.  I remember how she loved the professional wrestling matches at the HIC.  I remember how her garden was a reflection of her care, patience and inner beauty.  I remember the torch red ginger flowers.  I remember how the display shelf in the living room was almost always the same, every year I would visit, for the past 20 years.  I remember how she would tell me that I was the first boy she ever agreed to babysit because I fell asleep in her arms the first time I was there.  I remember how I had a space in her shelf where she kept the pictures of the other children she helped raise, and how I always had my graduation picture and my cowboy picture there, even when I was a grown up, visiting 30 years later.  When I would visit her, no matter what problems I was having at the time, I would remember how in her house it was a simpler time and how all was right with the world.  I feel the world is a little bit less kind and a little less gentle and a little less caring without her.  I feel I have loss a precious part of my childhood.  A piece of a happier time is gone forever.  I am sorry that I only got to see her about once a year (because I live so far) and I could not go to the funeral.   I know not being there will trouble me for the rest of my life.
