She was born on November 9, 1941, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ulu was a stay-at-home mother for over 15 years before rejoining the workforce with Kaiser Permanente, Punawai Clinic as a cashier and receptionist. She enjoyed playing bingo at the Elks Club in Pearl City and her annual trips to Las Vegas to play blackjack and poker machines.
