Harold grew up in Kalihi and is a 1950 graduate of Farrington High School. He later served in the US Army and after his honorable discharge from the military he moved to Los Angeles with friends. There he met and married, Merle on Christmas day in 1957. Harold and Merle - along with Cary and Wendy - moved back to Hawaii in 1961. Then they had Shane…..bought their home in Kailua in 1965 and as a surprise, Michelle was born in 1969.
Harold loved the ocean and taught his children how to love and respect it as well. He took them day and night fishing, crabbing, how to get tako, pick ogo, opihi and pipipi. He taught them how to fix cars and them how to drive standard shift in the parking lot at Kailua High School. That was a requirement for them to get their drivers license. If you could drive standard you can drive anything. He also taught them how to make and build things - like his model airplanes and cars.
He also shared his love for sports with his children and grandchildren and was very instrumental in the development and co-founding of Kailua Youth Athletic Club (KYAC).
Harold loved to go to the tracks - horse racing!!! He loved para-mutual betting. If he could not go to the tracks, he wanted to go to Las Vegas to place his bets. He bet on every Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stake races every year.
An avid traveler, Harold took Merle and explored many beautiful places they always dreamt of visiting. Japan, Europe and China just to name a few.
His sons, Cary and Shane shared their love for golf with him. He started to golf after the age of 60. His son, Shane gave him a beautiful set of Yamaha clubs for his birthday. Once Harold learned how to play, there was no stopping his participation in the Las Vegas tournaments golfing with his friends old and new. Harold just loved to golf.
Harold was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer which also metastasized to his brain and spine October of 2012. He underwent radiation therapy twice and in January 2014 it was also found in his ribs. Hospice Hawaii was called in February to assist at home with his care. Harold was so loved by his family and left us on March 4, 2014.
HONEY is what Merle always called him…….they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage and together became one.
Harold was an extraordinary man, amazing husband, outstanding father, papa and friend.
He will truly be missed.
