Walter attended Ensley High School, and proudly served his country in the US Navy. He went on to further his career in Engineering at The University of Alabama and UAB. Walter worked for Ingales in the 1960s and retired after many years of dedication at Rust International. Walter enjoyed his time as a master Amateur radio operator; call sign K4CLG. He was a member of the Maritime Mobile Service Network where he contributed his time to calling in emergencies to the coast guard. Walter was a dedicated lay leader in his church since 1960.
In 1959 he married Doris Jean Barber Kirkwood and had 62 years with the love of his life until her recent passing just one month ago. He is preceded in death by his wife Doris Jean Kirkwood; brothers, James Clyde Kirkwood and Charles Houston Kirkwood.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, children, Carolyn Green (Jim), Lisa Miller, Walter Kirkwood Jr. (Shawnette);sister, Anita Kirkwood; sister-in laws, Diane McCay (Billy), Linda Barber; grandchildren, Jim Green Jr., David Green, Erika Ward Gilchrist, Keila Kirkwood Perry, Kayla Kirkwood, Sarah Miller, Jade Kirkwood; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would be honored to have memorial donations sent to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church at 452 9th Ave, Pleasant Grove, AL 35127.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 1, 2022 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with a service following at 11:00 am. A committal service will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
