John McGeever, age 83, of Vestavia Hills, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday, December 5, 2022. John was born on February 14, 1939 to the late Patrick Joseph and Myrtle Denman McGeever. He was raised in Homewood, was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, and graduated from John Carroll High School. He went on to Auburn University where he played football for Shug Jordan, and earned his degree in business administration. John retired from the NFL after playing five years with the Denver Broncos and the Miami Dolphins. As a member of the United States Army, he served in Monterey, California. He enjoyed a long career as a real estate developer in Birmingham until his retirement.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marlyn McKinstry McGeever; three daughters, Meredith Kynerd (Kevin), Lana Benner (John), Aimee Jackson (Todd); and two sisters, Bridget Williams and Leila Keown and his sister in law Jeanette McGeever. He also leaves seven grandchildren whom he cherished, Anna Kate Benner Moores (Wilson), Maggie Benner Wambsganss (Caleb), Mariel Kynerd Nash (Banks), Jay Kynerd, Gaines Jackson, Ben Jackson, and Marly Jackson. John had recently enjoyed the arrival of his two great grandchildren, Bo Moores and Milly Moores. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Julia Shearer, and brother Patrick Joseph McGeever, Jr.
The family will receive friends at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church,1728 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209, on Friday the 9th of December, 2022 beginning at ten o'clock in the morning with the funeral service following at eleven o'clock. The burial will be private for the family.
