Jane Parker Selman unexpectedly passed away the morning of Friday, August 25, 2023. Jane was a Birmingham native and attended Shades Valley High School and graduated from Miss Howard’s School for Girls, as well as attended Gulf Park College in Long Beach, MS.
Jane worked in administrative roles at Mill & Textile Supply alongside her father, Young & Vann Supply, and Lamar Advertising. She was a long-time member of the St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church congregation of Hoover, AL.
Jane was known for her decorations at EVERY holiday and had her attic stored full of Halloween skeletons, Santa’s, shamrocks, and Easter bunnies. She loved colorful jewelry and fashion. She was always dressed head to toe around the holidays, wearing elaborate sweaters that let you know what season it was. Her enthusiasm for fun made her always “Fun Aunt Jane” to both of her nieces and all of their friends. She would take their post-midnight calls most nights. If she was mad, you knew it. If it was happy hour, she knew it. Jane loved her animals - MANY that were not her own.
Jane fought many battles. As a breast cancer survivor, in 2004 she was recognized and awarded the “Life Inspiration Award” by the American Cancer Society, which led to her educating and supporting other breast cancer patients undergoing the same procedures that she experienced.
She was born and reared in Alabama (Roll Tide!), but Jane also felt at home in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, where she enjoyed family fellowship along the Ponte Vedra Club boardwalk. Jane never missed a birthday, congrats on a new job, or anniversary with a card that contained her beautiful cursive handwriting.
She was preceded in death by her parents Linton & Miriam Selman. She is survived by her younger sister Ann Selman Kunkel and brother-in-law, Rick, and two nieces Holly Kunkel Ainsley (Ryan, Evan - great nephew) and Kristin Kunkel. She also had a cast and crew of beloved cousins and friends she kept in touch with over many years. As one of the longest living neighbors in her community, Montreat Condos, her family would like to thank all those who showed care to Jane, especially during her difficult times. A very special thanks to Julie & Ken Kotlowski and Elizabeth & Bobby Tooney for all the help they provided to Jane, her pets, and her family. In addition, the family would like to thank the Vestavia Hills Police Department for their gentle care and thoughtful consideration of Jane Parker Selman. She was loved and is already missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be shared as donations to the American Cancer Society, where she previously volunteered.
A visitation for Jane will be held Thursday, August 31, 2023 beginning at 10:00 at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Graveside services will be private for the family.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsvalleychapel.com for the Selman family.
