At age 68, our beloved Dr. Brock (“JC” or “Bud”) peacefully joined his gracious Heavenly Father Sunday June 23 while at home in Vestavia Hills, Alabama after an extended illness. James was born in Mobile, Alabama and was raised in Chickasaw, Alabama.
James attended University Military School (UMS) for boys in Mobile from 1969-1973. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama from 1973-1977 where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and an inductee into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in the United States. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree. James also graduated from The University of Alabama School of Medicine from 1977 – 1981. He was inducted into the national medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha before graduating with his Doctor of Medicine degree. Additionally, he received the J. Marion Sims Award for outstanding performance in the obstetrics and gynecology curriculum at the UAB School of Medicine. Subsequently, James entered specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in July 1981. He completed his residency in June 1985 after serving as Chief Resident from 1984-1985. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Brock began his practice at Montclair OB/GYN - Baptist Medical Center. After 39 years of practice, he retired May 31, 2024 from Grandview OB/GYN - Grandview Medical Center.
Throughout, he maintained his professional affiliations with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Jefferson County Medical Society, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the Greater Birmingham OB/GYN Society. He was an extraordinary physician who performed more than 5,000 deliveries and countless gynecologic surgeries in his career. He truly enjoyed his work. Dr. James Carl Brock was a talented, respected, kind, and compassionate individual. He and his wife Paula attended services at The Church of the Highlands – Grandview Campus. He was adored by his family, his friends, his staff, his colleagues, and his patients. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
James is preceded in death by his father James A. Brock, Jr. (JAB) (1984); his niece Jana’ Hayes (1993); his brother-in-law Ronald L. Hayes (2023); and his mother Jane Brooks Brock (2023).
He is survived by his loving wife Paula Brock of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; his children: James A. Brock III (Vincent Franchino) of Huntsville, AL, Katie Tompkins (John) of Birmingham, AL, and Alexander Freeburg of Nashville, TN; his precious granddaughters Whitney and Ann Tompkins of Birmingham, AL; his sister Claudia Brock Hayes of Mobile, AL; his aunt Betty Falkner of Boaz, AL; his many, many cousins; his office nurse of thirty-five years Ms. Lisa Kreider of Birmingham, AL; and his LIFE-LONG FRIENDS/”BROTHERS:” Tillis Brett, Mike Cassidy, Vic Davis, Dr. Steve Kimbrell.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 19, 2024 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at The Club, 1 Robert S Smith Dr., Birmingham, AL. 35209 with a reception following.
