Gladys Hale Dunkin of Vestavia Hills, Alabama passed away, surrounded by her family, on July 11th, 2023 at the age of 87. Gladys married her high school sweetheart, Charles, on July 18th, 1954. Together, they raised a family, built a business, and created a beautiful life. Gladys and Charles were one week shy of celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary. Gladys, Momma, Grammy, Sister, “Bis,” was the rock of her family. She played a pivotal role in shaping her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Gladys’s steadfast faith, servants’ heart and positive attitude impacted others beyond measure. She will be greatly remembered for her generosity and outpouring of love to others. These virtues made her like a second mother to many. She was an active member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Gladys was an avid reader and loved spending time with Charles at their farm where she enjoyed making biscuits and tending to her rose garden. Her most cherished times, even in the last days of her life, were being surrounded by her family.
Gladys was proceeded in death by her parents Lillian and Bernard Hale and her brothers Wayne Hale and Glenn Hale. She is survived by her devoted husband, Charles Dunkin; daughters, Sharon Collins (Duane), Susan Allred (Bob); grandchildren, Grace Marie Small (Jonathan), Dunkin Allred (Martha), and Austin Allred (Cheyenne); great grandchildren, Ellis Anne Allred and Mary Dunkin Allred; sister, Clarrice Hoggle; and many nieces and nephews. Gladys’s caregivers were a blessing beyond measure, especially her “righthand,” and special friend, Veronica Lewis.
A memorial service for Gladys will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Shades Mountain Baptist Church - Worship Center, 2017 Columbiana Rd., Vestavia Hills, AL 35216.
