Frank Charles Jones of Birmingham, AL, lived life well. At age 83, Frank passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024, after a long-fought battle where nature overcame nurture. While he lived, Frank nurtured the mind, the soul, and the body---and his life exemplified these values. Frank was smart, had a quick wit, was faithful to his wife and church, and attended the YMCA and ran every morning for decades. He loved a predictable routine, fast cars, sweet treats, and a good laugh.
Frank was the son of George Hiles Jones and Florence Harris Jones. In his early years he was educated at Indian Springs School and later developed his mind, and his love of numbers, by attending the University of the South at Sewanee and graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Economics. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, The Order of Gownsmen, an honorary society, and of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. He received a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan and an additional Master’s in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a fellow to the Society of Actuaries, Frank chose a career as a life insurance executive. Frank invested in his soul and others by being a vestry member of the Cathedral Church of the Advent, a chairman of the Board of Directors of St. Martin’s in the Pines Retirement Home, and a chairman of the Jefferson County Employees Pension Board. To take care of the body, Frank was an active member of the Mountain Brook Club where he loved to play tennis, served on the board of the Alabama Heart Association, and nurtured the whole person by being on the Advisory Board of the Boy Scouts of America.
Frank was predeceased by his parents and his son, Caldwell Charles Jones. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Laura Benedict Jones, his daughter, Laurie Jones Kent (Shea) and three grandsons: Caldwell Bishop Kent (Erin), Garrison Eastin Kent (fiancée Callie Roane), and Thomas McKinley Kent all of Beaumont, Texas, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and friends that are family, Jana and Carey Rome.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Frank’s caregivers: Kendria, Nicki, Melissa, Tracy, Margaret, Kameron, Kristina and the team at Affinity Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at the Cathedral Church of the Advent on Friday, September 13th, 2024, at 1:00 PM with visitation to follow at the church.
