Donald W McCormick

As a small child, Don and his mother, Carolyn Bass McCormick, endured the premature deaths of his father, Donald William McCormick, Sr. and sister, Jean McCormick. A few years later, Carolyn had the great joy to marry Paul Porter, who was a loving father to Don. The Porter clan welcomed Don and his mother with warmth and love. Don's life was made even better with the arrival of his beloved baby sister, Paula Porter Crockard.

After graduating from Phillips High School, Don enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. Following his honorable discharge in 1946 Don attended Auburn University, where he greatly enjoyed the antics of his lifelong friends in Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Don married Virginia Morton on February 10, 1951 and had a long and happy marriage. He began his career with Motion Industries, moving to Atlanta to open a branch office, and then to Chattanooga, where he began his business as a manufacturer's representative. Don and Virginia returned to Birmingham in 1980, picking up with friends and family and loving being home.

Don was a smart and funny man, who loved planning trips, tinkering with projects, telling funny stories, and being with family and friends. He was a faithful member and a leader of each church along his journey, serving as a Deacon and an Elder of Independent Presbyterian Church.

Don was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Morton McCormick, his parents, Carolyn Bass McCormick Porter and Donald William McCormick, Sr., his sister, Jean McCormick, and his stepfather, Paul Albes Porter. He will be missed by his sister, Paula Crockard (Francis), and his children, Laura Abney (Richard), Donald McCormick (Cathy), and Gini Williams (Hunter), his grandchildren; Emily Anders (Justin), Bill Abney (Heather), Caroline Ornellas (Reese), Annie McCormick, Hunter Williams, and Porter Williams (Katie), as well as his nine great grandchildren and his cousin, Doris McCormick McBeth and many nieces and nephews. The family is thankful for the tender care of Andrea’s Mobile Sitting Services.
